Anti-Procrastination

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

Procrastination is the practice of deferring or postponing duties until the last possible moment or after the deadline has passed. Procrastination is defined as a "type of self-regulation failure marked by the illogical postponing of tasks despite possible negative consequences," according to some experts.

Procrastination comes in many forms. Examples of disguised procrastination include:

  • Multiple online courses are being taken

  • I read much too many books and articles.

  • Setting up a productive workflow that works for you

  • Excessive taking of notes

  • Participating at conferences and activities

  • Taking part in multiple communities

If you find yourself performing any of the following, consider whether you're avoiding serious work. Assume you want to compose music. You enroll in several music classes, study articles about how to improve your music-making skills and evaluate outstanding songs. The true effort, however, is to compose music.

People often believe they need to take a course before they're 'allowed' or ready to start/create something, therefore taking one is a kind of procrastination.

Doing is the best way to learn. Experiment with "just-in-time" learning. Real work is difficult, but it will get you closer to your objective faster than falsework. Fake work gives us the illusion of progress while concealing the fact that we're growing further away from actual outcomes.

Let's remind ourselves to perform the real task the next time we catch ourselves in camouflaged procrastination. If you're curious, I spent days researching this post before writing it. I forced myself to write this morning after waking up. What's more, guess what? It was successful.

Now it's time to get down to business.
